NEWS OF THE WEEK

23rd June ... Porter A/L are reducing their fuel surcharge on VIPorter reward flight redemptions from $40 to $20.  WestJet have since followed in reducing the surcharge on companion vouchers from $60 to $40.

24th June ... Jim Liu of AeroRoutes reports on shortened seasonal routes from Flair A/L, which includes Calgary [YYC] to Kelowna [YLW] ending 13th September but will operate between 18th December - 4th January 2027.

24th June ... Jim also reports likewise for WestJet, which includes the new summer seasonal Encore Q400 route just launched to Penticton [YYF] which will end 7th September instead of 23rd October.

24th June ... WestJet have repainted ex Swoop 737-8 C-GORP into a new Toronto Blue Jays livery which will no doubt make regular visits.  First visit was 28th June unfortunately on an overnight turn arriving 0130 departing 0730, though it did go to Victoria during the day.

26th June ... while not exactly BC related, but as many people from metro Vancouver use Bellingham [BLI] airport in WA, Jim Liu reports Allegiant A/L last flight to Oakland CA [OAK] was 25th May which only leaves four routes to Burbank CA [BUR], Las Vegas NV [LAS], Palm Springs CA [PSP] and Phoenix Mesa Gateway AZ [AZA] plus Alaska/Horizon to SeaTac [SEA] & Portland [PDX] and a few regional routes within WA state from San Juan A/L on Cessna light aircraft.

26th June ... YVR Airport Authority report after successful trials to their biometrics progam that  WestJet will introduce biometric boarding for all US bound passengers.  They look at a screen to verify their identity with no documents or boarding pass required.  Early data finds boarding times are up to  12.5% faster than manual verification.

27th June ... Jim Liu reports Air Canada have downgraded their newly launched route to Sapporo - Chitose [CTS] from 787-9 to 787-8 between 18th January - 27th February 2027 (route launches 17th December 3x weekly Monday / Thursday / Saturday return following day).

27th June ... Delta Heritage Airpark brunch fly in.  Nothing to excite heavy metal spotters, I was a little surprised not to see classics like Harvard's, Chipmunk's and Nanchang's, but a wonderful vibe harking back to days when I was a lad when you could freely wander around an active airfield plus chat with the owners and like minded enthusiasts of GA.  Many of the exhibits were local residents and quite a few aircraft flew in and out during the day.  In addition to aircraft, there was a small collection of mainly British cars too.  I will produce a separate blogpost on the event when I get time (after Pitt Meadows last week...!!)

Largest aircraft present was the unique push/pull 1963 C-FKWX Cessna 336 Skymaster

1946 CF-EZI North Amerian Navion in a faux USAF scheme the type never wore (it served with the Army and ANG as the L-17A).  This one used to be part of the four ship Fraser Blues acrobatic team - does anyone know if they are still active?

2002 C-GJZI Van's RV-6 over from Victoria, there were a couple more of this homebuilt present

Overview of some of the mostly British cars present

My favourite a 1938-1957 Ford Thames ½ ton pick up, also sold under the Thames brand from 1952 as the E83W which I think this one is as it has a Thames hood emblem

Overview of the north side of the airfield from the parking lot with RAA hangar

Overview of the south side of the airfield with Mary's Place cafe

A couple of gazebos from CASARA and RAA in front of Mary's Place cafe who provided the breakfast pancakes followed by BBQ lunch - not been for a while, but on summer weekends used to offer brilliant old school home made cakes and sandwiches with a good cup of tea!
