NEWS OF THE WEEK

8th August ... unreported last week, but more details have come out since.  Porter A/L PD444 from Victoria to Toronto scheduled for 2230 was delayed so much due to a reported frightened child refusing to stay in their seat, slipping through their seat belt and hiding under the seats.  The runway closes at 0030, it took an hour before the aircraft returned to the terminal and by the time the aircraft was disembarked and luggage removed, the runway closure deadline passed and the flight was cancelled.

11th August ... Air Canada announce sale of 25% stake in Aeroplan for $2.5b to investors led by Blackstone and La Caisse, valuing the program at $10b.  From AC's press release:

"Air Canada will maintain full operational control of Aeroplan and a controlling ownership interest after the minority investment. Aeroplan remains a core part of Air Canada’s commercial strategy and customer value proposition, and the experience of members, partners and employees will be unaffected by the transaction.

Proceeds from this investment will be used toward the repayment of Air Canada’s upcoming US$1.2 billion ($1.7 billion) bond maturity, strengthening Air Canada's balance sheet through a reduction in gross indebtedness without a corresponding reduction in cash and cash equivalents. Most of the balance to be applied to accelerate the share repurchases contemplated in its long-term strategic plan."

12th August ... RCAF Snowbirds performance over White Rock, the final display in BC operating out of Abbotsford.  They did a flypast of downtown Vancouver on their way back east on the 13th and stopped in Kamloops for the final BC town to host them.
